C I N E M A A U D I O S O C I E T Y. O R G 59 "I'm sorry, can you repeat that?" Addressing Hearing Damage There is not a single place in existence on this planet void of sound. I've been to some really quiet places and one of my favorites is on the eastern bench of Zion National Park in Southern Utah. This area is far from any city or town, dozens of miles from any paved road and, aside from an anechoic chamber, is the quietest place that I have been. If you stop and stand still on one of the many trails in this area on a calm day, you can experience what I call your own self-noise. Even in such a place, there is still the sound that the fluid in your ears creates, your own heartbeat, or the subtlety of each breath. This would be ver y similar to experiencing an anechoic chamber. Although I do find the outdoor location to be a much more peaceful and fulfilling experience than standing inside a chamber isolated from the outside world with no sound reflections whatsoever. b y C A S A s s o c i a t e R y a n P e d e r s e n
