2 S U M M E R 2 0 2 6 I C A S Q U A R T E R L Y Hello to all CAS members and other readers! Our CAS Awards Show this spring was a fantastic event. I hope many of you were able to attend. Our host, Chris Hardwick, was fantastic and the inaugural Jeffrey Wexler Award presentation was very meaningful to me and other friends of Jeff. But whether you were there or not, this edition of the CAS Quarterly has details about the winners and photos from the show. Congratulations to the winners and all nominees! This year, the CAS plans for a number of interesting activities. More info will be announced via email and in later issues, but they will be split between Los Angeles and other parts of the country and the world. If you'd like to hold a CAS event in your geographical area, let us know, especially if you might be willing to participate in the planning. Events can range from simple gatherings to group dinners, and even seminars or screenings. Email the CAS office or contact Events Committee Chair Chris Minkler. I want to briefly comment on a few of the articles in this issue. First, Ryan Pedersen has put together an important article about hearing loss in the mixing community. As a former emergency responder, I am very familiar with the hearing loss that can occur with sustained exposure to loud environments such as those many of us face every day. But it is also my firm belief that our listening skills are vastly more important than just our hearing. Still, sometimes technical compensation for hearing loss is a necessity but doesn't prevent us from using our experience, skills, and listening to do excellent work. G. John Garrett has a write-up on the 2026 NAB Show that includes detailed info on new products and other aspects of the show I expect many of us will find quite interesting. There's also a great article on communication methods and technology by Matthew Nicolay, using his work on Peacemaker as a case study. This is another topic of great interest to me as a large chunk of my work has fallen into this area. I did two movies with Lee Orloff requiring extensive communication design and implementation, The Abyss and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The latter was puppet-centric which turned out to be great training for the puppet work in several other movies. Speaking of shared experiences, CAS is about to embark on our own version of "Ask Me Anything" using our Zoom room to have selected experts—both members and other specialists—host informal sessions to discuss our work, techniques, and equipment. If you are interested in hosting one of these sessions on a topic you feel strongly about, we encourage you to contact our office. This begins my last year as president, and it has been an honor to serve. But if there are other initiatives you've been hoping for, please let me know right away! Peter F.
