C I N E M A A U D I O S O C I E T Y. O R G 53 Mark Mandler CAS and David Mitlyng both have a long history working production sound with Pentimento Productions, the documentary company responsible for producing And So It Goes. Mark being their East Coast go-to guy, and David being their West Coast favorite. David shares, "As a freelancer, I get tossed into these kinds of unique environments a lot and get pretty good access to people. I've been doing this in L.A. for about 36 years." Both Mark and David started their careers working both camera and sound. David recalls, "I teamed up with the smart kids who wanted to be the writers and the producers, and I would handle everything technical. I'd shoot it, I'd edit." After working camera and sound, he decided he preferred lugging sound equipment to hauling "40-lb cameras." Mark also worked multiple technical film roles in college and gravitated toward sound as his chosen field. Mark had already worked on one Billy Joel project about the 100th Madison Square Garden concert (Billy Joel: The 100th: Live at Madison Square Garden). For the And So It Goes East Coast interviews, Mark's sessions with Joel frequently involved Billy sitting at a piano, so Mark put a Schoeps overhead on Billy, and either Schoeps or an MS pair over the piano to be able to capture both a clean vocal and the richness of the music played.
