4 S P R I N G 2 0 2 4 I C A S Q U A R T E R L Y While spring may officially be a few weeks off, our Spring issue celebrates recognition of our peers with our CAS Award nominees and this year's CAS Career Achievement Award recipient, re-recording mixer Joe Earle CAS. Joe's work has garnered him numerous CAS and Emmy nominations and wins across multiple genres. Read about Joe's life and career trajectory in his interview with Bob Bronow CAS. This year marks 60 years since the inception of the CAS! Looking back through the years, former CAS President and current CAS historian Jim Corbett CAS MPSE shares some of the history of our organization through his eyes in his article, "My Journey with the CAS." Comedian and author Samuel Levenson once said, "You must learn from the mistakes of others. You can't possibly live long enough to make them all yourself." In the vein of this insight, CAS Associate Sam Casas asked a handful of mixers to share some of their mistakes —something most are not so inclined to admit. Read—and learn—from these folks in Sam's article, "Lessons Learned the Hard Way." While most of us who work in studios may travel from studio to studio occasionally, our production sound mixer colleagues are most susceptible to being away from their homebase for a prolonged period of time. To get a better understanding of the process, Millar Montgomery CAS spoke with a few production sound mixers who share their experiences and tips in the excellent article "The Challenges of Traveling for Work." Also in this issue, CAS Associate Gregory Vilfranc looks into ways of maintaining—and possibly improving—our hearing in his "Aural Calisthenics" submission, while Erin Rettig CAS provides the second part of his excerpted PhD dissertation in "Scoring Stage Upgrade Considerations Part II." For the third year in a row, CAS and MPSE teamed up for a day of insight, information, and fun in the form of "The Sounding Board v3.0." Featuring excellent panels and the annual "Parade of Carts and Bags," coverage of the successful event is presented here with full videos available on the CAS website. And don't forget to read about the happenings of your fellow members in the "Been There Done That" and "The Lighter Side" sections. Finally, a "Congratulations!" to all the CAS Award nominees. We will be celebrating you, our Student Recognition Award nominees, and this year's CAS Filmmaker Award recipient, J.J. Abrams, whose projects provide an incredible canvas for audio professionals to color with sound. Be sure to vote and I hope you can attend our organization's biggest event, the CAS Awards, on March 2! Thank you for taking the time to check out this issue.
