C I N E M A A U D I O S O C I E T Y. O R G 35 The growth of the CAS Awards has expanded our acknowledgment of the talent in our field. The Lifetime Achievement Award mentioned earlier was rebranded as the Career Achievement Award, with the first recipient being Michael J. Kohut in 1996. Under President Richard Lightstone, the first Excellence in Technical Achievement Award went to Lectrosonics in 2005, with 2006 introducing the CAS Filmmaker Award, given to Quentin Tarantino and presented to him by Past President Michael Minkler. The 2012 ceremony, under President David Fluhr, saw scoring mixers joining production and re-recording mixers as recipients of CAS Awards. The 2013 ceremony was the first that split the Motion Pictures category into "Live Action" and "Animated," with award recipients expanded to include ADR, Original Dialogue, and Foley mixers. The first Student Recognition Award recipient was Danny Maurer in 2015. Under President Mark Ulano, the inaugural Edward J. Greene Award for the Advancement of Sound was bestowed upon Tomlinson Holman in 2018. President Karol Urban's tenure saw our first President's Award go to Mary Jo Lang in 2019. Karol and her Board also had to figure out how to hold the ceremony remotely in 2021 during the pandemic—and did so with great success! This March, under the helm of President Peter Kurland, we'll celebrate our 60th year as an organization at the CAS Awards. That's a Wrap In closing, I want to thank all the hundreds of volunteers and helpers who, since 1964, have given their time to grow the Cinema Audio Society. Our original publicist, Dorothea Sargent, and the IngleDodd Media team really helped the organization grow from studio-sponsored tables at our ceremonies to major corporate sponsorships and other industry relationships. Office manager Carol Thomas is our behind-the-scenes maestro. To get a sense of how many people it takes to put on our "little party" every year, I suggest you look at the last pages of the CAS Awards Book. Lastly (and most importantly), an infinite "thank you" goes to my wife Ruth Corbett for putting up with me working on CAS projects late into the night all these years. We have had more than 20 presidents, along with hundreds of others volunteering to serve the organization. They have taken the CAS from its dark days to where it is today; a vibrant, relevant, and financially steady organization with fantastic educational gatherings, screenings, seminars, co-events with MPSE and others, banquets, meetings, and outreach. We should all be very proud of our Cinema Audio Society. Sincerely, James A. Corbett CAS MPSE Jim with the 56th Board of Directors
