"We were both excited about the project. Carla growing up African American in the Pacific Northwest during the time the movie took place lent a unique perspective." Luisa felt this was invaluable to the project. Carla emphasized Luisa's incredible research and heart for a real and accurate collaboration created a perfect team for this project. From the beginning, the producers set a goal of inclusion and that goal was met throughout the entire crew. Luisa and Carla brought in a talented and diverse group of artists. ey were also thrilled that they were able to bring two newer team members to join them on this amazing project and get great experience. e film itself was based on the true story of Sonny Vaccaro who brought Air Jordan to the Phil Knight-run Nike company. e characters were developed individually, as to how they would be portrayed on screen. Some being accurate to the person themselves and some created for screen appeal. For instance, Sonny Vaccaro wore an Afro during this period in real life. We all decided that the factual hair style wasn't as important as the story itself, says Carla. Matt Damon was changed with full character make-up. We changed his skin tone and used washes of color to add character and texture to his face with subtle under-eye discoloration and broken vessels to transform Matt into Sonny's look for the film. Phil Knight's look was a more accurate look to real life and was created by Kristin Wahl, who has worked with Ben Affleck many times as his hair designer with Luisa doing his make-up. Transforming Ben into the character every day was fun and demanding as Ben was also directing the project and was always busy. Viola Davis, who portrayed Michael Jordan's mother, was created by the Academy Award-winning team of Jamika Wilson and Sergio Lopez Rivera. With all the other characters and background, Luisa and Carla wanted to make sure they were true to the period and region.
