THE ARTISAN WINTER 2024 • 35 and Luisa made sure all background actors went through a fitting process to ensure they were true to the era and every actor would be perfect for the scenes. ey are most grateful for their team who were instrumental in creating this look. ey wanted to create a hair and make-up story that would not be distracting to the eye, but give a real and honest account. • • • • • • • B Y K R I S T I N W A H L ( P E R S O N A L H A I R D E S I G N E R T O B E N A F F L E C K ) When Ben first talked to me about his next project (Air), my initial reaction was, "Wow, what a great story!" I never knew the history behind Air Jordans or even that Nike was an up-and-coming brand in sports at that time. en Ben told me he would be portraying Phil Knight in the film and my mind started racing on how we would achieve this transformation. Initially, Ben leaned toward as much historical accuracy as possible, but as the overall design of the film evolved and the cast came together, the direction for Ben as Phil had to evolve as well. e goal changed to figuring out how to blend Phil Knight with Ben Affleck. We didn't want his look to be distracting or to take audiences out of the story and in trying to be literal with Phil's hair styles on Ben, we felt we were doing just that. Bob Kretschmer made the wig for Ben and a big part of the design was capturing some of the texture and color of Phil's hair. Bob did this beautifully! Phil had much finer, lighter and curlier hair, so my goal was to recreate some of the shape, texture and tone on Ben in a way that didn't feel like a caricature of Phil. We purposely went with a darker shade of red and did not recede the hairline because it felt over the top on Ben. I set the wig with a bit of Shu Uemura Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective hair oil and kept the shape round over the ears, high on the forehead and so curly bits around the edges. Everything was directed forward from pretty far back on the crown in order to mimic Phil's silhouette. I wanted to keep the texture looking a bit frizzy and wispy, so I used very little product overall—just the occasional bit of Oribe Super Shine Light moisturizing cream to keep the curly ends separate and a spritz of water here and there. With the combined efforts from Luisa to lighten and redden up Ben's eyebrows and beard, we felt we were able to infuse just enough Phil Knight to achieve Ben's creative vision for the story. • Jessica Allen Kristin Berge Dane Cristian Diego Shian Banks Kaulani Goldwyn Conrad Hilton TJ Jerome Jaz Kimble Polly Lucke Kerrin Jackson Angie Wells Sergio Lopez Rivera Rebecca Cotton Monique Jackson (Apprentice) and all the talented make-up artists who day played.
