THE ARTISAN WINTER 2024 • 85 EXTENDED FAMILY NEWS In Memoriam Caryl Codon (1940-2023) Journeyman Hair Stylist Caryl was an actively involved union member and participant in many events supporting Local 706. Caryl was elected to be Recording Secretary, starting January 1, 1976. She held this position for two terms (six years). Caryl was also an active participant in the committee that put together our 1975 Deb Star Ball. She represented our Local at many of the AFL-CIO trade shows that were held here in Los Angeles. She was an active member of the Constitution Committee in helping to revise and update our Constitution in 1978. She gave back to her union, offering to train fellow hair stylists. She taught and co-taught many classes to the hair stylists of Local 706. She co-taught with Adele Taylor the "Iron Curling Seminar," and a group of hands-on workshops, including iron curling, period hair, finger waving & men's haircutting, lace front wig application with continued information about working with switches and falls. She supported and loved her union. Caryl had joined Local 706 in December 1969. She was Department Head Hair Stylist on Voni Hinkle-Vrooman (1958-2023) Journeyman Hair Stylist It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Voni Hinkle-Vrooman, a cherished member of our community. Voni's journey began in 1988 when she joined Local 706 as an associate, working diligently at NBC. Her dedication and passion for her craft Wally and the Beaver, The Witches of Eastwick and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She was also the Department Head on the sequel to Wally and the Beaver (Leave It to Beaver), and Moonlighting. She worked on the TV movie The Rockford Files: A Blessing in Disguise, Hook, Evening Shade, Charles in Charge, and The Bad News Bears. She worked steadily thru the '70s, '80s and '90s. She was nominated three times for an Emmy, for her work on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. She won the gold on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Caryl finally hung up her curling iron and took an Honorable Withdrawal in 1999. quickly propelled her upward, and in 1991, she became a trainee. Just a few months later, she successfully passed her journeyman test, showcasing her exceptional skills. Voni considered joining 706 as one of the best decisions of her life, and she wore her membership with pride. Her creativity knew no bounds, and her expansive body of work is a testament to her remarkable skills. From feature films like Get Out and Total Recall to the hit television show NCIS: New Orleans, Voni's touch brought characters and stories to life. Her creativity truly dazzled in the production of The Cat in the Hat. She fashioned an off-pink wig for Kelly Preston, exuding elegance and charm, while adorning Dakota Fanning with whimsical rolled pigtails, adding a touch of enchantment to her character. Perhaps the biggest challenge was creating electric blue two-piece wigs, ingeniously designed to defy gravity and withstand the playful antics of Thing 1 and 2. Among her many achievements, Voni was honored with Emmy nominations for her outstanding work on If These Walls Could Talk and Days of Our Lives. Additionally, her incredible work on The Cat in the Hat earned her a well-deserved nomination for the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award. Voni Hinkle-Vrooman passed away in New Orleans. Voni is survived by her loving children, Haley and James, and a host of friends and colleagues who will forever cherish her memory. . Caryl and her husband Bill Tharp
