www.postmagazine.com 6 POST MAY/JUNE 2023 BITS & PIECES DELL'S HIGH-END 7960 DESIGNED FOR POST, VR AND AI ROUND ROCK, TX — Dell (www.dell.com) offers the Precision 7960 in both tower and rack configurations. The company had both at their booth at NAB this year in Las Vegas. The 7960 tower can scale in performance to meet users' most demand- ing requirements. At NAB, Dell showed a 7960 tower with four graphics cards (users can choose between AMD Radeon and Nvidia RTX or T series options) and half a dozen fans to keep things cool. The 7960 uses Intel's latest Xeon processors (w9/ w7/w5), with up to 56 cores, and can be outfitted with as much as 152TBs of storage. Dell Optimizer learns and adapts to the way users work, and provides analysis for users to track system resources, including for components such as processor, memory, graphics and hard drive. "The M&E industry is always looking for more compute capability on both the CPU and GPU, as well as higher bandwidth for larger file sizes, especially as projects are ever increasing in complexity and resolution," explains Scott Hamilton, global industry strategist for Dell Technologies. "Dell launched an entirely new series of mobile and fixed workstations that provide the perfor- mance and expandability to enhance these new workflows." Specifically, Hamilton says the Dell Precision 7960 tower and rack systems offer extreme compute performance on the CPU, with up to 56- and 112-core Intel Xeon processors, respectively. Both platforms offer maximum product line expendability with Gen 4 and Gen 5 PCIe slots for improved data transfer via GPU, SSD storage, networking and other video I/O add in cards for the most demanding workflows. "The Precision tower is the most expandable product and will support up to four double-wide graphic cards for the ultimate performance in GPU acceler- ated applications, such as AI, GPU-based rendering and image processing," says Hamilton. "With a balance of cores and turbo clock speed (up to 4.8GHz), the 7960 tower can handle both single- and multi-threaded operations very effectively." BLACKMAGIC DESIGN ANNOUNCES URSA MINI PRO 12K OLPF FREEMONT, CA — At the 2023 NAB Show, Blackmagic Design (www.black- magicdesign.com) announced the Ursa Mini Pro 12K OLPF, a new digital film camera that adds a high performance optical low pass filter to the 12K Super 35 image sensor. The OLPF reduces artifacts, such as moire and aliasing, while preserving color and critical image detail. The Ursa Mini Pro 12K OLPF is avail- able from Blackmagic Design resellers for $6,385. Blackmagic's Ursa Mini Pro 12K features a 12,288x6,480 12K Super 35 sensor and 14 stops of dynamic range. The combination of 80 megapixels per frame, new color science and the flexibility of Blackmagic RAW makes working with 12K a reality. Oversampling from 12K gives customers the best 8K and 4K images, with the subtle skin tones and high level of detail found in high-end still cameras. Customers can shoot at 60fps in 12K, 120fps in 8K, and up to 240fps in 4K Super 16. Ursa Mini Pro 12K features an interchangeable PL mount, as well as built in ND filters, dual CFast and UHS-II SD card recorders, and a SuperSpeed USB-C expansion port. When shooting in virtual production environments, the high frequencies of the LED matrix in video walls can cause problems for ultra sharp modern lenses and high-resolution sensors, creating interference patterns. Using an optical low-pass filter minimizes that interference, which results in a reduction of moire and aliasing. Ursa Mini Pro 12K OLPF adds a high performance, optical low-pass filter that is precisely matched to the 12K sensor. The OLPF also incor- porates updated IR filtering that improves far red color response which, when combined with Blackmagic RAW processing for the Ursa Mini Pro 12K OLPF, preserves color and critical image detail for new levels of image fidelity. The 12K's extreme resolution goes well beyond traditional motion-picture film, giving users benefits comparable with shooting film, including a high level of detail, wide dynamic range, and rich, deep color. The camera is well suited for feature films, episodic television, immersive experiences and IMAX. The high level of definition around objects also makes it well suited for working with green screen and VFX. Recently, the Ursa Mini Pro 12K was added to Netflix's approved camera list, which specifies the capture requirements necessary to be qualified as an approved camera by the streamer. This includes dynamic range, resolution, codec and workflow compati- bility. Netflix requires 90 percent of a program's final runtime be captured on approved cameras.
