CINEMA CAMERAS & LENSES www.postmagazine.com 26 POST MAY/JUNE 2023 ARRI OPENS INTERNATIONAL OFFICES, INTRODUCES NEW CONTROL UNIT MUNICH, GERMANY — Arri (www.arri.com) made a number of announce- ments in recent weeks, including the introduction of its ZMU-4 (Zoom Main Unit), which is designed to act as a modern version of the classic and ubiqui- tous zoom control. Rugged, weather-resistant and ergonomically designed, the ZMU-4 seamlessly transitions between wired and wireless configurations. Its connectivity enables versatile, clutter-free camera builds and fast on-set workflows. With the launch of the Hi-5 hand unit, Arri introduced the fifth generation of its Electronic Control System (ECS). The ZMU-4 joins that new ecosystem, sharing the Hi-5's swappable RF-EMIP, RF-2400 and upcoming RF-900 radio modules, with different frequencies for different territories and shooting situa- tions. In its most basic configuration, the ZMU-4 can control cforce motors via the LBUS connector without any wireless capability. The CAM connector opens the door to run/stop, camera control and user button activation for Arri and third-party cameras. Arri Rental North America, the camera and lens equipment rental service company, recently announced the opening of a new office in Toronto, with ac- cess to the Alexa 65 camera and DNA, Moviecam and Heroes lenses. The new location also houses an Arri Creative Space to further support filmmakers by showcasing Arri products and technology. The Toronto facility is the third lo- cation in Canada, alongside Vancouver and Calgary offices. The 8,200-square- foot facility includes 2,600-square-feet dedicated to Arri Creative Space — a fully-outfitted studio offering the latest products and technology. This in- cludes the full line of Alexa cameras, Signature lenses, lighting, Pro Camera Accessories (PCA) and Camera Stabilizer Systems (CSS). And in Rome, Arri has opened a new office to further promote and support the film and A/V industry in Italy. Situated in the heart of Rome's Prati dis- trict and close to numerous production and post houses, the new office has creative space, a show room and a large warehouse. It also features dedicated space that can be used to host workshops and master classes. COOKE OPTICS AUGMENTS S8/I FF LENS RANGE LEICESTER, UK — Cooke Optics (cookeoptics.com) has introduced four new focal-length lenses (27mm, 35mm, 65mm, 18mm), joining the S8/i Full Frame (FF) series range. The company introduced the first seven focal lengths of the S8/i series last March. With an all-spherical design and T1.4 throughout, these lenses were developed following feedback from cinematographers wanting to achieve more realistic and cinematic images for digital motion capture. The S8/i FF lenses are designed to deliver beautiful images that have an organic feel and a smooth, spherical bokeh effect with minimal color fringing. Improved contrast results in the viewer seeing a sharper image on the screen. Cooke's design team was led by Academy Award-winning lens designer Iain Neill, who together completed a wide-ranging analysis to guar- antee maximum contrast performance for digital camera sensors. The S8/i's all-spherical design is constructed to deliver a near telecentric projection of light rays, which is more efficient for creating organic images that present as both sharp yet natural with dimensional roll off. The range comes with Cooke's latest intelligent /i technology, which includes /i data focus and iris position, /i motion inertial data and /i maps, the Cooke factory-calibrated shad- ing and distortion data. The 16-lens line up will be added to over the course of this year. CANON'S EOS R5 C GAINS NETFLIX APPROVAL MELVILLE, NY — Canon's EOS R5 C (https://www.usa.canon.com) was recent- ly added to Netflix's list of approved cameras, allowing filmmakers to use the full-featured, hybrid full-frame mirrorless camera for Netflix productions. The R5 C supports 8K/60p internal RAW or Cinema RAW Light recording, HDMI 8K RAW output to compatible recorders and 8K HDR recording (PQ/HLG). An internal cooling fan enables non-stop 8K/60p recording. Its 8K sensor and DIGIC X processor offer 4K and 2K oversampling. Version 1.0.3.1 firmware elevates the overall image quality and camera op- erability for content captured using the EOS R5 C, which is priced at $4,399. With this recent addition to the list of Netflix-approved cameras, Canon now has eight models that qualify, including the C500 Mark II, C300 Mark III, C70, C300 Mark II, C700 FF, C700 and C500. Netflix requires 90 percent of a pro- gram's final runtime to be captured on approved cameras.
