www.postmagazine.com 2 POST MAY/JUNE 2023 EDITOR'S NOTE his month's cover story looks at Paramount Network's huge- ly-popular series Yellowstone — but don't think of it a "Western." At least that's what editor Chad Galster, ACE, suggests. He's worked on the show since its pilot episode, and while the look of the series is undeniably Western, Galster sees Yellowstone as a story about people. "It is in that genre, unmistakably — undeniably in that genre — but it's just a story about a certain group of people with certain conflicts and relationships — love, life, death, all of those things," says the editor. "I just simply engage with the material on that level." Galster hit it off with creator/filmmaker Taylor Sheridan, who was looking for an addition- al editor during Season 1. They've gone on to collaborate on all five seasons, as well as on its prequel, 1883, and on Mayor of Kingstown and Those Who Wish Me Dead. Sheridan and Galster are currently working on Lioness, an upcoming series starring Zoe Saldana and Nicole Kidman, set to premiere this summer. Not surprisingly, all of these shows keep him very busy, but he's thankful to be a part of them and to have such a creative relationship with Sheridan, who welcomes his input. You can check out my interview with the editor, beginning on page 12, where he details the show's workflow as well as his favorite scenes from Season 5. On page 10, Iain Blair sits down with Tom Rob Smith, who extends his success as a novelist into showrunning for the new FX on Hulu limited series Class of '09. The FBI thriller spans multiple decades and is told across interweaving timelines, all while examining issues such as justice, humanity and the choices people make. Smith shares insight into the challenges of his latest role, his experience with production and post, and what he's learned that will carry over to his next project as a showrunner. My colleague Kendra Ruczak helps kick off our "Summer Movies" coverage with a look at the new Marvel feature Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Kendra connected with the VFX team at Wētā FX, who, along with the team at Framestore, led the charge as the project's main VFX vendors, with Sony Pictures Imageworks and ILM also contributing. Wētā's work spanned more than 650 shots, and included the creation and destruction of the colossal Arête Laboratories structure in the film's third act. VFX supervisor Guy Williams and anima- tion supervisor Michael Cozens share insight into the challenges they faced in creating the city-sized structure, which required a high level of detail for different close-up shots. You can learn more, beginning on page 16. If you've visited our website — postmagazine.com — or receive our newsletters, you may have already seen our "Post Picks" from the recent NAB Show in Las Vegas. Beginning on page 4, we call attention to winners and honorable mentions, whose products and technol- ogies will be empowering post professionals in the year to come. The show was enormous, with over 1,200 exhibitors, and while it's impossible to cover it all, these NAB presentations definitely stood out.
