the rock stuff sounded great; I love the way it crumbled. Is that common for you as a Foley mixer to create elements to pass off to the FX editors, or does it usually stay separate with the Foley editor? JB: We have Foley editors, but there's a filter of FX editors, there's a filter of Bonnie, Danielle, and Scott that make it all sound really good. We have our little Foley bubble, and we're given a set amount of tasks, and we handle those tasks with the time allotted. We love to coordinate if we can, but sometimes we don't have the time. Often, it's "Get it done, and do it really well," so that they can take it upstairs and finish it up there. Doc, for the ADR, I'd love to hear how you keep everybody feeling at ease, relaxed, and getting the takes that you need? Doc Kane CAS: Well, first of all, I keep my finger off the talkback. I say hello to them when they come in, see if I can get them some water, and let 'em do their thing. Keep the Wars are so iconic, so it's about picking which elements are going to carry each moment through. It's beautiful stuff to be working with. Another moment I really enjoyed was when Vader uses The Force to stop the ship in midair. That sound was massive. BW: Yeah, that was a lot of "Force Rumble." It's tricky in the home theater environment. You can't just rely on a bunch of subs to make it shake the room. You've got to weave in other ideas to make that impactful. We had the big score, but Deb also wanted to hear Vader struggling. Vader's path of power is kind of a growth. He peaks in Rogue One with a bust through the door kind of power, but this is before that, so he's still learning to be so powerful. He was supposed to be struggling in that moment and, ultimately, he does fail. But again, it's that balance of trying to pick each moment for each thing. It's amazing how you were able to give those sound effects their own emotion. Jason, one great moment that I thought must be a combination of sound effects and Foley was when the rocks are crumbling down during that big battle between Vader and Obi-Wan. Can you please clue us in on how you handled that moment? Jason Butler: I can't do anything without my Foley team of Andrea Gard and Sean England. To speak specifically about that rock section, they wore masks and probably ate about 30 pounds of dirt and rock when they were doing that scene. We took the rock and dust and little sprinkles and did five or six layers of rock movement—picking them up and smashing them down. We coordinated with the FX editors and said, "Hey, we're riffing on this rock crumbling." I know they took a lot of our Foley elements and probably fine- tuned and re-worked that stuff for the final mix.
