As IMDb so eloquently summarizes, it features "Three strangers bonded by their love of true-crime podcasts, record their own to accompany their investigations of murders in their building on the Upper West Side of New York." This year's CAS Award winner in the Television Series – Half Hour category comes from the show's second season. I had the chance to meet the winners. JOSEPH WHITE JR. CAS – Production Mixer Congratulations on your first CAS Award win, Joseph! Tell me about how you got into the world of production sound mixing. Originally, I wanted to score films. I wanted to write music. I was a musician through high school and part of college. I played most brass instruments, but I played French horn throughout most of my musical career, and I was in Drum Corps. I was interested in the sound of movies technically, but not necessarily the recording of it. So, when I went to school, I assumed that I would get an opportunity to write more music. I recorded my own soundtrack one time and the director whom I was working with said, "Hey, can you record my movie?" And I said, "Sure!" I knew I was a studio engineer [and knew] how to capture sound. Then, with the film, I realized, oh, this is very different. I realized I have to learn another way to record. So, I started doing it and I started enjoying it more and more, and it just took off from there. I was a boom operator for a while. I got to work with mixers who were very involved in my career and they pushed me to really branch out and continue mixing. Did you have a mentor during this period? Well, the one person that really pushed me hard, even though I was booming for him for five years, was Scott Breindel. He's truly a New York mixer, and he pushed me hard. When I expressed my interest to get back into mixing, he wouldn't let me off the hook after that. He really pushed me and I'm glad for that. We have very different styles of mixing, but his whole outlook and attitude toward the business resonated with me. How did you become involved with this series? Quite a while ago, I worked with Jane Raab, who was producing Sex and the City. She called me for this job. I was in Georgia doing a show and it was a rough show. It was amazing, but the material was very dark. Something you MEET THE WINNERS Event photos courtesy of Alex J.
