THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2023 • 17 CRAFT EDUCATION On March 26, we hosted our first Make-Up Craft Education Event of the year. Participants included Surrat Beauty discussing their make-up brand, offering samples and an additional gift with purchase gratis through the store Frends Beauty Supply. Asian and woman-owned brand Clean Circle discussed how they have created sustainable beauty tools and provided samples and a professional discount. Perbelle sent full-size gratis of their famous CC Cream and other skincare products and STOLLA discussed their luxury capes and salon wear. Skincare brand Eadem discussed their products designed for melanin-rich skin and how their company is not only "made by women of color chemists, vetted by women of color dermatologists (but is also) tested on skin of different shades." Local 706 members Sarah Benjamin Hall discussed her brow lamination classes and Glen Alen discussed his Drag Makeup Academy. First Entertainment Credit Union provided refreshments and discussed their various financial services available to our members, including union dues payment loans and more. Local 706 make-up artist Stevie Bettles came to discuss his brand, Out of Kit, with his unique stick-on silicone prosthetics. Creating characters on screen with prosthetics dates back more than 100 years with the iconic animated moonface in the 1902 short film Le Voyage dans La Lune or the classic horror characters of make-up artist Jack Pierce's Frankenstein and The Wolfman. Make-up artists have continued to transform the face and body with mediums that have evolved over time; including wax, foam, and silicone to name a few. As technology and digital effects continue to evolve, make-up artists have felt the challenge to keep the integrity of our craft alive. Frustrated with hearing productions say, "Oh we'll just create a digital one in post" or "forget it, we're cutting it from the script because it takes too much time in the make-up chair," Stevie felt compelled to create something for both in the trailer use, and out on the field that would preserve the opportunity and creativity for our artists. "I wanted to really simplify the process and create a system that would be less intimidating to the average make-up artist. Traditional prosthetics require the need to apply an adhesive and also the technical experience of the medium. I felt I could create something that worked as simple as a Band-Aid. If a Band-Aid already has the adhesive applied on it, why can't we do that with a prosthetic." This "Band-Aid" prosthetic became his unique brand, Out of Kit. Available in four flesh tones, Out of Kit has created a wide range of prosthetics to create any character with aging, injury or fantasy pieces. Stevie discussed his new additions to the brand, including traditional silicone pieces, tattoo transfers and 2D transfer pieces; which include injury, trauma, tattoos, skin textures, fantasy, and even beard stubble. Stevie's presentation to our artisans discussed not only these Peel N'Stick prosthetics, but also their additional services, including customizable text tattoos and the 3D scanning process to creating custom prosthetics as well. His visual presentation shared the step-by-step process on how 3D scanning and digital printing can help speed up production time and also assist with customizing pieces that fit our actors' faces.
