THE MESSAgE Whether THE TASTING PANEL goes to the brand execs or the brands call us, there is an abundance of news to report, from the latest releases to behind-the-scenes experiences with some of the world's most influential importers, winemakers, distillers . . . well, you name it. Brief Encounters We may not have enough pages in each issue to devote as much attention as we would like to each person whose path we cross, but please note that if it's in the publication, we deem it noteworthy —Meridith May, Publisher & Executive Editor The Golden Age of Luxury PHOTO COURTESY OF THE MANDARIN ORIENTAL T he year is 1963 and the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong has just opened, debuting as the newest and tallest building to grace the dignified Hong Kong skyline. Fifty years later, the Mandarin Oriental is no longer the newest or the tallest structure in the Asian metropolis, but it still stands tall as one of the shimmering beacons of enduring luxury and quality in this cutting-edge corner of the world. As the flagship property of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, the 50th anniversary of this location represents a dual celebration for the hotel as well as the Group as a whole. Not only do the residents of Hong Kong embrace the Mandarin Oriental, this 50-yearold hotel is a vital part of daily life: Hong Kong residents comprise 80% of restaurant patrons on any given day. "The hotel is ingrained in the culture of Hong Kong," says General Manager Jonas Schuermann. "Everyone has a story about the Mandarin." The story this year is one of legacy as the Mandarin Oriental celebrates its "50 Fantastic Years." From their Golden Celebration Stay Package to modern twists on traditional 1960s fare, the hotel has combined historic flair with contemporary luxury, successfully reinventing what it means to "travel in style" for today's affluent globetrotters. —Megan Wieczorek Jonas Schuermann, General Manager of the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong. 16  /  the tasting panel  / august 2013 august 2013 TP0813_001-33.indd 16 7/24/13 9:46 PM
