Hotel Pierre overlooks Manhattan's Central Park from its prestigious location on Fifth Avenue. In the Lap of Luxury NEW YORK'S HOTEL PIERRE REDEFINES THE TERM by Anthony Dias Blue "L A Grand Suite at Hotel Pierre. uxury" is a word that is overused these days. In most cases it turns out to mean "just a little bit better than average." The Civic with leatherette upholstering; the hotel room that doesn't offer a view of a dingy airshaft. This is what passes for "luxury." But true, bone fide, authentic luxury does exist and, if you are willing to pay the price, it can be yours. All you have to do is book yourself—and your family or significant other— into a Grand Suite at the Hotel Pierre in New York. The Pierre is located at 61st Street and Fifth Avenue, at the southeast corner of Central Park, one of the Big Apple's most prestigious addresses. It is an elegant 39-story tower built in 1930. In 2005 it was acquired by Taj Hotels, a luxury chain headquartered in Mumbai. The new owner embarked on an extensive renovation of the already very grand property. 114  /  the tasting panel  /  august 2013 TP0813_104-132.indd 114 7/24/13 9:41 PM
