From the Guggenheim to the Hamptons by Lana Bortolot PHOTO: LANA BORTOLOT Marilisa Allegrini walks the red carpet at the Guggenheim with limited edition of La Grola. T he Italians never really do anything in less than a big way, so it was no surprise to us that Allegrini chose the Guggenheim museum as the site to celebrate 30 years of La Grola, a singlevineyard wine made in the Valpolicella region. Named for a legendary bird, the wine enjoys a cult following for its mysterious and complex notes. We were intrigued by the layers of bramble and dark crushed fruit, and when we drank it while viewing the newly opened James Turrell light show (the other hot ticket in town), we were brought to a trance state. Marilisa Allegrini brought us down to earth, however, with a charming introduction to the wine and its special anniversary art: a limited-edition rendering of the original label. Last time we saw the amiable Adrian Bridge of The Fladgate Partnership, we caught him tasting port in a Starbucks in Astoria, Queens. In a paper coffee cup. This time, he visited New York under slightly more elevated circumstances: as part of a multi-city Declaration Tour announcing the 2011 vintage (we asked for teeshirts; sadly, he had none). Bridge joined David Guimaraens, also of Taylor Fladgate, and Christian Seely, Managing Director of Quinta do Noval and Quinta da Romaneira. The port pros conducted vertical vintage port tastings (2003–2009), and also used the tour to celebrate a 25-year relationship with Kobrand. Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte was the sponsoring sparkler for a gala presented by Cottages & Gardens magazine and Holiday House Hamptons, a showcase for up-and-coming interior designers. Nicolas Feuillatte also sponsored the month-long exhibition, where it was staged in various rooms in the house. Next stop: Bastille Day. 28  /  the tasting panel  /  august 2013 TP0813_001-33.indd 28 7/24/13 9:46 PM
