me of a homestead Edward Hopper would have painted, and the triple dormers inspired us. Jim got to drawing and we came up with the house featured in the film. I could not have asked for a better, more precise construction and paint department, led by construction coordinator Mike Vallarino, general foreman Calvin Mangum and paint foreman Kevin Mahoney. We had to contend with Santa Clarita winds that topped forty mph some days, but the house was so structurally sound, it could support anything the production wanted to do. It was solid, and between the woodwork, moldings, plaster, wallpaper, hardwood floors and aging, it felt as though it had been there for decades. Gene Serdena, set decorator extraordinaire, brought the house to life with his incredible crew: leadman Grant Samson and buyer Allison Isenberg. They dug deep into the characters and homed in on all the details, from Otis Sr.'s record collection to the production stills from his past shows hung on his office walls. And beyond the house, they had a vast ranch to dress, including stables, barns, corrals, various outbuildings and Em's trailer. The crew also built and landscaped the main training arena in front of the hero house, as well as the shed that Otis Jr. (OJ) uses to hide from Jean Jacket. Jordan and Hoyte identified the shed early on as a marker in the valley that would give us scale against the vast landscape, and it became an anchor for a lot of our scenes. In the basin of the valley, a dirt road led down to an adjoining ranch, where Jupiter's Claim and the Star Lasso Experience Stadium were built. Jupe and Otis Sr. were essentially neighbors; it was a fifteen- minute commute by the main road or a quick five-minute trip via the dirt road between the two properties. A.
