The call to design a series in Puerto Rico stopped me, but it was the true story of a chubby, willful Dominican immigrant growing up in 1980s Miami that turned me around. I couldn't wait to read Claudia Forestieri's take on being the new kid, not just in town, but in America. There are countless unique voices and perspectives rarely seen on television, so any opportunity to bring a new slice of the world to life gets my complete attention. What I didn't expect was for Cucu and the Castelli's to resonate like those iconic '80s TV families of my childhood. Their sarcastic humor and no-frills lifestyle were so relatable and loveable while their bond was goal worthy. This wasn't just another comedy series. Gordita Chronicles had something magical from the first page. And who doesn't want to sign up for a location with sandy beaches and piƱa coladas?
