THE RELEVANT STAGE: Five Very Good Reasons to Visit San Pedro By>>RAY BUFFER The Relevant Stage – San Pedro's Musical Theatre Company offers a variety of activities centered at Warner Grand Theatre and serving the community of San Pedro. Visitors are constantly astounded by the high concentration of things-to-do in this burgeoning, downtown waterfront. 1. ON THE HORIZON IN THE SUMMER Now in its third year, TRS YOUTHORIZONS is accepting registrations for this performing arts day camp for 8 to 18 year-olds. Classes begin July 5 and continue for four weeks, four days per week (Monday – Thursday) from 10AM to 4PM. When combined with performance time and dress rehearsal, students receive over 100 hours of training and instruction from various instructors as part of the program. The curriculum includes music theory, singing, dancing, acting, writing, directing, improvisation and working in teams. TRS YOUTHORIZONS also helps to build self-esteem, bolster natural talents, foster an appreciation for the arts, and encourage civic awareness and volunteerism. Tuition is only $400 per student. The program concludes with performances of "Teen Anthology" – an original musical, on August 1st - by the students, onstage at Warner Grand Theatre, 478 W. 6th. St., in San Pedro. Classes will occur at People's Yoga, Health and Dance at 365 W. 6th Street in San Pedro, CA 90731. Register there, in person while space is available. Tuition may be paid by Visa, Mastercard or checks made payable to The Relevant Stage. 2. A FREE PERFORMANCE OF A BRAND NEW MUSICAL Composer, Robert Gross and Lyricist, Ray Buffer, have created a new, original musical loosely based on Homer's "The Odyssey" and Euripides "Polyphenus", titled "The One & Only". This new sung-through musical/opera will receive a staged reading on Thursday, July 1- 7PM at Warner Grand Theatre, 478 W. 6th St., in San Pedro. The story follows a young teen girl named Jen Claire Cameron, born with a single eye in the middle of her head. Her adventure begins when her existence is brought into world focus after she is discovered by a visiting optometrist to a rural area. Jen Claire must quickly assimilate to public school life. Is beauty truly in the eye of the beholder? Find out, by coming to see this free staged reading at 7PM on July 1st – an event that is part of the Los Angeles Festival of New American Musicals. Free tickets: 1-800-838-3006. 3. DIRTY, ROTTEN GUYS LIKE US The Tony-award winning Broadway musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is performed live on stage this month from June 11 to 20 at Warner Grand Theatre, 478 W. 6th St., in San Pedro. Based on the popular 1988 MGM film set on the glorious, glamorous Riviera, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is the delicious musical comedy that follows two con artists as they take on the lifestyles of the rich and shameless . . . and end up with a lot more than they bargain for. You'll agree with the critic of the Wall Street Journal, "I know funny when I see it, and this show is a perfect hoot!" It's a five-star treat that will keep you laughing for weeks to come. Tickets may be ordered by calling 1-800-838-3006. 4. DOWNTOWN MOVIES FOR $3 Don't miss this series of affordable films presented on the 50-foot screen at Warner Grand Theatre, 478 W. 6th St., in San Pedro. Why stay home and rent a video for more when you can see the film in a beautiful, art- deco, historic 1931 theatre, for less? Not to mention enjoying the lure created by having fresh popcorn, soda, snacks, beer and wine available from the concessionaire, Sacred Grounds Café. Warner On Wednesdays (W.O.W.) is a returning festival of Summer films with 15 in a row, this year followed by two additional one-off films in the fall and winter. Enjoy a wine-tasting before the films across the street from the theatre at Off The Vine – call (310) 831-1551 for wine details. Admission for these films is only $3, and $7 will include a popcorn and soda, or make it a date night: $13 includes two admissions, two popcorn and two sodas. The Relevant Stage – San Pedro's Musical Theatre Company - first introduced Warner On Wednesdays back in 2009 in partnership with Central San Pedro and Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Councils. This year, Los Angeles County Supervisor, Don Knabe has provided underwriting for the series. 5. THE POPPINS' PROJECT – SENIOR CITIZEN OUTREACH AT THE RELEVANT STAGE The Relevant Stage (T.R.S.) announces its new senior citizen outreach arm, THE POPPINS' PROJECT, a means of bringing seniors to the theatre and the theatre to seniors. TRS will offer a free performance on Friday, June 11th, at 12-noon, at Warner Grand Theatre of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels to seniors 55+ (1-800-838-3006 for tickets).
