THE LEG SHOW "CARNIVAL CABARET" This vaudevillian cabaret and burlesque show, in keeping with the spirit of the performance, has its own song which pretty much tells you all you need to know: "Ladies and Gentleman, Step right up! Into the Carnival World of the Bump and Grind! We've got girls, girls, girls from around the World and across the Nation, Imported directly here for you! From the Exotic Orient to the Red Light District, from port towns to far off palaces, we've got ladies for the ladies and ladies for the gents--they'll make the old go young, and the young go bold. That's not all folks! We've got magic and comedy, snakes and swords, and clowns on bikes; from high wire heights... Come see them shimmy, come see them shake, all behind the velvet and don't be late, so if you already know, then we're ready to go! And we'll see you at the Carnival--Cabaret show!" MOVIES ON THE GREEN Movies will be shown every night of the festival at the Tiki Drive-In Stage. On Friday you can view Russ Meyer's "Faster, Pussycat", while Saturday's screening will be a double feature of "Beat Girl" and "Dragstrip Girl". The documentary about legendary tattoo artist, Sailor Jerry, called "Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry", will also be screened during the festival. It will be shown six times throughout the weekend in the Queen Salon. TATTOO CONTEST Finally, there's the main event – the Tattoo Contest. Contestants pay $10 to enter a specific category (i.e. Best Black & Gray) and the chance to win a trophy for themselves and their artist. A panel of industry leaders will judge each tattoo, using multiple criteria. The awards are imported antique Italian silver sacred hearts framed under glass. Second place for each category wins a ribbon. "Every year we are amazed as to the quality of tattoos contestants who enter into the tattoo contests," says Edwards. It couldn't be otherwise, considering that Long Beach was the tattoo cultural engine of the West Coast--the center around which technique and trends evolved. Long Beach was the home of Bert Grimms World Famous Tattoo, the longest operating tattoo shop in America (1927-2003). From this tiny shop on the Nu Pike in Long Beach, Bert Grimm fostered a cul- ture that influenced today's godfathers of the American Tattoo industry; names like Ed Hardy, Bob Roberts, Lyle Tuttle, Col. Todd, Bob Shaw, and Phil Simms, to name a few. The idea of organizing a tattoo conven- tion in Long Beach stems from the desire to pay tribute to the great art tradition that is tattooing--a tradition that contributed to the spread of this art all throughout the world, and helped pull the tattoo out of the Middle Ages.
