Inside DSEA Know of a great future teacher? DSEA offers $4,000 Christopher K. Smith Future Teacher Scholarship SEA invites all public high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in teaching to apply for this DSEA scholarship. The application is available at www.dsea.org/PDF/Scholarship 2013.pdf. These scholarships are administered by the DSEA Scholarship Task Force. They are given in memory of Christopher K. Smith, a social studies teacher in the Colonial School District, advocate for students and members, and NEA director for Delaware. Former husband of past DSEA President Earlene Gillan-Smith, he passed away suddenly in 1989. D Application and Award Procedures Applications and letters of reference should be sent or delivered to: DSEA Scholarship Task Force, 136 East Water Street, Dover, DE 19901. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 15, 2013. On or about April 9, DSEA will notify the top five finalists, inviting them to participate in an interview and complete an essay (one-hour time limit) on Tuesday, April 30 at DSEA headquarters in Dover. "I touch the future, I teach" - Christa McAuliffe (1948-1986) NASA Teacher in Space NEA President to keynote Rep. We welcome new NEA Student Chapter at DSU here is a new Student NEA chapter at Delaware State University Known as the . DIRECT Teacher���s Association, it hosted a Chapter Celebration and Membership Recognition luncheon, and invited DSEA and NEA representatives to attend. So far, 45 of their education majors have joined. DIRECT is the acronym of the Dept. of Education, which the students adopted. It stands for: Diversity, Interpersonal Communication Skills, Reflections, Effective Teaching and Assessment Strategies, Content and Pedagogical Knowledge, and Technology . DSEA President Frederika Jenner was on hand to congratulate each member and present their membership certificates. Also there was their DSEA organizer, Tammy T Wagner who is the exec. assistant to the DSEA exec. director. From NEA Member Benefits was Kimberly Lindsey who made sure they knew that they are welcome to take advantage of the Association���s information and discounts. Their advisors are Michele Rush and Connie Williams, faculty in the school���s Dept. of Education. Most of the students are majoring in elementary education, though there was one interested in high school social studies and special education, and two future middle school teachers. Through Wagner, DSEA will help the students with information and workshops to help them prepare for their future in education as well as help them with job search skills. 4 February 2013 DSEA ACTION! NEA RA elections, NEA president and Lt. Gov. Matt Denn to highlight Rep. Assembly weekend riday evening March 8 kicks off our annual meeting weekend with our Celebration Van Roekel Dinner at the Dover Downs Conference Center. This gala event is open to RA delegates, awardees, families and friends. The keynote speaker will be the Lt. Gov. Matt Denn. Honored this year will be: Legislative Friends of Education - Sen. Patti Blevins, Rep. John Kowalko and former Sen. Dori Connor ESP of the Year Award - Michael Brown, Capital Paras Assoc. Susan B. Roushey Advocacy Award - Mike Hoffmann, Colonial Paras Community Partner Awards Tawana and Shawn Riley of Espresso-N-Ice Coffee Shop of Dover, nominated by the Capital F E.A.; and Joann Conaway, volunteer and business liaison, Bridgeville, nominated by the Woodbridge E.A. Helen D. Wise Award - Howard Weinberg, former DSEA exec. director. On Saturday, as delegates get down to business, NEA President Dennis Van Roekel will keynote the session. Business items will include consideration of any changes to By-Laws and Resolutions; the adoption of a new two-year budget (see pages 11-13); and consideration and approval of the DSEA Legislative Program. There will also be nominations taken from the floor for delegates to the next two NEA Representative Assemblies. There are still four vacancies. During the normal DSEA elections, only three people ran for seven positions. Anyone who has been a member for at least a year may run. If you will not be present and would like to run, ask one of your local delegates to place your name in nomination and say a few words about your qualifications and desire to be an NEA RA delegate. www.dsea.org
