We were drawn to items like buckets of random electrical equipment, wires, rusted hardware, broken tools. Piles of untouched paperwork scattered everywhere, sheets of dusty plastic from forgotten repair projects and broken equipment. Too many chairs here and there, furniture in random places. Beneath all of this clutter live the original Rainier items. There was a very short turnaround time to transform the Mentryville interior from Elise's 1953 childhood to an uncared for 2008 version. The schedule allowed four days to undress the set, have painters age all the surfaces and then redress with ten times the volume of the original look. When first scouting Mentryville, I noticed some walls that were stripped back to the lath beneath the plaster. For the 1953 version propmakers built covers for those sections, which were removed for 2008, exposing another area Garza was too distracted to complete. Garza is particularly uneasy about one upstairs room, Elise's childhood bedroom, and he has stacked bibles up to the ceiling to cover the door. Bits like this are always fun. Of course, I imposed a color range and the bibles also had to go through legal clearance procedures, so it became a chore for Sandy to get the quantity needed.
