First-year Fellows serve as Production Designer on three-cycle short films and as Art Director on three more. Each production is critiqued before the entire student body. In the second year, Fellows design a thesis short that is ready for festival submission. AFI designers must: assemble an Art Department and collaborate with other disciplines in story analysis, find locations, develop visual concepts, modify locations, and build the scenery needed to create a believable and realistic world on screen, all while adhering to restricted budgets. Fellows are also trained in perspective drawing, hand drafting and model making, as well as digital drafting and 3D modeling in SketchUp ® , Vectorworks ® and Rhino ® . Each Fellow must deliver conceptual designs of five sets from scripts of their choice. Their second year culminates in a presentation to a panel of professional Production Designers. The AFI Conservatory thanks Laurence Bennett, Doug Meerdink, James Chinlund and François Audouy for their participation this year. ADG Jubilate Cox (2017) A hand-drawn perspective illustration colored in Photoshop ® and a hand-drawn sketch elevation of a set design from WILLOW, set in current- day Igbo Landing, Georgia. Jubilate came to AFI with a BFA in Production Design for filmmaking from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She has been the Production Designer and Art Director on multiple feature films showcased at international film festivals in Amsterdam and London. Fie Alber (2017) A hand-drawn plan and elevations, along with a digital model developed in Rhino ® for her design of a fantasy castle for the Scottish fairy tale THE LIGHT PRINCESS. Fie comes from Denmark, has a background in musical theater, completed her degree in business, language and culture from Copenhagen Business School and studied technical design at Roskilde Technical College before moving to Los Angeles to attend AFI.
