But when Chuck Hope moved his family to the area in 1978, it was a different story. In fact, the northern San Luis Obispo County AVA wasn't officially recognized until 1983. Even supposing this, with visions of microclimate variations and wide diurnal swings fluctuating in Hope's head, he took a leap of faith and planted vines during a year when The Cars self-titled debut album "The Cars" was first released. The album was an instant success in 1978; in fact, all nine tracks still play on the radio today and most of them are considered classics. For the Hope family, however, their biggest commercial success would come years later—and was well worth the wait. Hope sold grapes to the likes of Chuck Wagner (Caymus Vineyards) for his Liberty School label—later purchased by Hope Family Wines—and to others in the indus- try. Over time, the Hope family's vineyards expanded, and they became one of the largest growers of Cabernet Sauvignon in Paso Robles. But it wasn't until 1996 that Hope Family Wines established its own winery and flagship brand, Treana. The Hope Family estate vineyard in Paso Robles, CA.
