Enter Aberlour, the Speyside single malt first conceived by James Fleming in the late 19th century. Fleming, the son of a farmer turned distiller and philanthropist, became known more for his good deeds around the city of Aberlour than his making of the whisky that bears its name. His unassuming nature was one of his greatest attributes—not even a photograph of him exists today—and that unpretentiousness still lingers in the production of Aberlour single malts. Only five people can be found working the distillery on any given day, and every ingredient that goes into their single malts is sourced within 15 miles of the facility. Aberlour's motto, "Let the deeds show," is exhibited by the brand's dedication to allowing the whisky to speak for itself and by letting others do the talking. While still a discovery brand in the United States, Aberlour has received an incredible array of awards and recognition among connoisseurs, writers and in whisky competitions. Most recently awarded Distillery of Year at the International Whisky Competition, their cult- status A'Bunadh won "World's Best Single Malt" in the 2015 Ultimate Spirits Challenge. A'Bunadh, Gaelic for "the origi- nal," is a cask-strength bottling made in honor of Fleming and matured exclusively in oloroso Sherry casks. Once in a while, a transcendent whisky comes along that requires reflection and contemplation on the part of the drinker, and this is one of them. —Matt Jackson WINNERS Choice whiskies to get your year off on the right foot unassuming photograph lingers can be ingredient miles Aberlour's brand's WINNERS Whisk ( e ) y ABERLOUR SINGLE MALT WHISKY: A Stunning Range of Possibilities
