Alabama farmer, war hero and moonshiner among them. However, Clyde set himself apart from his fellow producers as a serious craftsman whose intent was on distilling the best whiskey coming out of Alabama. He armed himself with hand-built copper stills, fresh Alabama spring water and the finest local grains required for a quality spirit. The recently launched 92 proof, five year-aged bourbon propels Clyde's legacy forward to a new generation of bourbon aficionados. In the early phase of distillation, the bourbon mash is patiently aged in heavily "alligator" charred new American oak barrels to bring about a spirit that's easy-drinking on its own, on the rocks or as part of a craft cocktail recipe. The nose is distinguished by soft, sweet aromas of brown sugar, baked apricot, wild strawberries and nutmeg. The palate, meanwhile, follows with evocative and complex nuances of barrel spice, fruit and oiled leather that flow into a lingering finish. "Using a lot of great care and consideration, the Straight Bourbon spirit stays true to Clyde May's heritage and his craftsmanship," sums up Ron Call, Clyde May's Whiskey Master. Clyde May's Straight Bourbon is already on track to become an enduring classic and essential bar staple, thanks to its Gold Medal win in the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition. —E. G.
