10  /  the tasting panel  /  july 2016 INDUSTRY SPOTLIGHT A New Partnership Two family-owned Pacific Northwest distilleries, Hood River Distillers and Captive Spirits, are joining forces to form a mutually agreeable partnership that supports the growth of Captive Spirit's signature Big Gin brands and creates more opportunities for the Seattle-based distillery. As one of the leaders in the craft distillery movement, the 82-year-old Hood River Distillers will provide an experienced team to help Captive Spirits navigate its growth and distribution model. With over 100 employees nationally, Hood River Distillers has the staff and infra- structure to help Captive Spirits reach its next phase of growth. Currently Captive Spirits produces 7,500 six-bottle cases, and this is expected to increase when the new distillery begins operation this fall. The new facility will be located in the Ballard shipyard with room for an additional still and a new tasting room. Heavy Hitters B rown-Forman announced its 2016 Broker of the Year awards during the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association annual conference in Orlando, Florida. The Heavyweight Broker of the Year was presented to Great Lakes Wine and Spirits, Michigan, and the Middleweight Broker of the Year was presented to Breakthru Beverage of Montgomery County. Awards are based on business per- formance measures including volume attainment goals, distribution criteria and other brand-building activities during the company's fiscal year ending April 30, 2015. Great Lakes Wine and Spirits and Breakthru Beverage of Montgomery County each received a commemorative plaque and a $5,000 check to benefit the organization's charity of choice. The Spice of Life N ewcastle Brown Ale has announced the introduction of its third limited-edition variety pack brewed in collaboration with Newcastle's sister brewery, Caledonian, one of the oldest breweries in the U.K. Available at retail starting in May, Newcastle's Variety Pack Batch #3 will include the brand's new Caley Amber Ale in combination with returning limited-edition Newcastle British Pale Ale and flagship Newcastle Brown Ale. A Barrel of Flavor L ast month, craft gin specialist Distillery No. 209 introduced its complete lineup of No. 209 Barrel Reserve Gins to key markets across the nation. Three limited-production expressions—aged in used wine barrels that formerly housed Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon—are now available. The No. 209 Barrel Reserve Gins start off as the flagship unaged No. 209 Gin and possess its same modern botanical profile: light on juniper and heavier on citrus and spices like Bergamot orange, cassia bark, lemon, coriander and cardamom. It is then aged for three to six months in hand-selected oak barrels formerly used in the production of Napa Valley's finest wines. The barrels are sourced primarily from Distillery No. 209's sister wineries, Rudd Oakville Estate and Edge Hill Estate. Brown-Forman's Middleweight Broker of the Year was presented to Breakthru Beverage of Montgomery County. Brown-Forman's Heavyweight Broker of the Year was presented to Great Lakes Wine and Spirits, Michigan.
