16 Summer 2015 | AEA Advocate She also regularly meets with the superintendent and effectively communicate the concerns of her Association members with the backing of specific data to support her stance. Jan also assumes an active role in the district's Meet and Confer process. She attends all local trainings and is a regular participant in the annual AEA delegate assembly. Last year, Jan and her third grade team received a LIFT grant from AEA to assist her in implementing a cross-curricular program for her grade level. This program brought to life, science, social studies, reading, and math. The grant tied in with the third-grade curriculum and brought the experience of pioneer life to her entire third grade. To culminate the project, Jan and her third-grade team traveled with the students to Tubac, Arizona, where they were able to experience what they have been studying in their classrooms. Outside of school, Jan is active in her church and community. She is a member of her church orchestra and the Wittman Ringers Bell Choir. She was a Sunday School teacher and former board member for First Book, and is a past member of the Sandwich Squad, which makes sandwiches for the homeless. Overall, when you walk into Jan's room or see her at a school event, she puts your mind at ease. Aside from being extremely organized, her smile and demeanor yield a kind and caring teacher, yet her expectations reach beyond the minimum. She is amazing with her knowledge of what will work for her students, how to push them academically, and allows her students to reap the benefits of academic awards and honors. As a teacher, friend, mother, wife, and grandmother, Jan knows what it takes to make the most of public education. She has seen her own children excel with their public education and her support. She is in the trenches and not afraid to speak up for what is right for her students as well as for teachers and public education as a whole. Janice Autenreith makes educators proud to be a part of our profession because she is the epitome of an exemplary teacher.
