AEA Advocate | Summer 2015 17 For 2015, California Casualty is awarding a total of $102,000 in grants to 87 public high schools in 29 states for athletic programs in need of funding. In Arizona, the following three high schools are being awarded a California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant. In response to a grant application submitted by Football Coach and AEA member, ian curtis, the Ironwood High School football program is receiving a $1,000 grant to help replace mismatched and tattered uniforms. The second grant is being awarded to Coronado High School for their co-ed track and field programs in response to the grant application submitted by the Track Coach and AEA member, Jeff carpenter. The grant amount of $1,000 will be used to buy warm ups and needed spikes and help pay for needed equipment such as pole vaults, throwing implements and hurdles. A third grant of $1,000 is being awarded to Westview High School for the boys' golf team in response to the application received from Coach and AEA member, trevor Degerman. Coach Degerman personally purchases golf balls when their stock allocated by the district runs out. In addition to golf balls, the grant will help buy team shirts and hats. The Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant program was developed in response to the pressure put on public schools to scale back on athletic programs due to shrinking state education budgets combined with the increasing demands to achieve higher academic results.
