In the fall, Arizona Educational Foundation will select 10 fi nalists for the award, all of whom will be honored and celebrated at the annual luncheon on November 19, 2015 at the Arizona Biltmore. Alternatively, a teacher wishing to be considered for the award may simply download the 2016 Teacher of the Year application, complete and submit it without being formally nominated. ENGAGING STUDENTS IN INTERNATIONAL ISSUES: THE CHOICES APPROACH History, civics, geography, government, and other social studies educators are encouraged to attend this introductory workshop for grade 7 – 12 teachers on September 25, at Mesa Community College. The cost is $145 per person and includes two units ($78 value), lunch, 7-hour certifi cate of attendance, and all workshop materials. A limited number of scholarships are available for pre-service teachers. During the workshop, participants will: • Be introduced to the Choices Program's award-winning resources and approach to teaching about contested international issues; • Examine and work with the Choices units The Cuban Missile Crisis: Considering its Place in Cold War History and Dilemmas of Foreign Aid: Debating U.S. Policies (provided); • Network with exemplar colleagues in social studies education from across the state. THOMSON REUTERS/ASIS&T: OUTSTANDING INFORMATION SCIENCE TEACHER AWARD The Thomson Reuters Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award (ASIS&T) recognizes the unique teaching contribution of an individual as a teacher of information science. Individuals directly engaged in teaching some aspect of information science on a continuing basis, in an academic or a non-academic setting, are eligible. Winners will receive $1,000, $500 towards travel or other expenses to the grant recipient, contingent upon the recipient's attending the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) annual meeting, and $250 to ASIS&T Headquarters towards administrative fees. WILD ONES: LORRIE OTTO SEEDS FOR EDUCATION GRANT PROGRAM The Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education Grant Program gives small monetary grants up to $500 to schools, nature centers, or other non-profi t educational organizations for the purpose of establishing outdoor learning centers. VERNIER/NSTA: TECHNOLOGY AWARDS The Vernier/NSTA Technology Awards promote the innovative use of data-collection technology using a computer, graphing calculator, or other handheld device in the science classroom. Prizes include $1,000 in cash for the teacher, $3,000 in Vernier Products, and up to $1,500 toward expenses to attend the annual NSTA National Convention. DOLLAR GENERAL/ALA/AASL/NEA: SCHOOL LIBRARY DISASTER RELIEF Dollar General, in collaboration with the American Library Association (ALA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and the National Education Association (NEA) is sponsoring a school library disaster relief fund for public school libraries in states served by Dollar General.
