AEA Advocate | Summer 2015 15 AEA is pleased to present this year's Christa McAuliffe Award to Jan Autenreith, who demonstrates teaching excellence both in and out of the classroom setting. As a third-grade teacher at Homer Davis Elementary School, Jan teaches to students of all levels, providing individualized attention to meet their needs. Jan is quite creative and engages her students with songs and activities that tie in to higher learning objectives. She collaborates with the special education team to provide inclusive services to students with special needs ensuring that they all learn to their highest levels possible. For her English Language Learners, Jan makes sure that the students are able to participate fully by obtaining translated books for the students or designing materials and lessons that are at their ability level so that they are also included in the classroom environment. She also tutors students after school on a regular basis. Jan has also excelled outside of her classroom. In 2009, she was named the Homer Davis Teacher of the Year. She was the lead application writer for her school's A+ Award, which the school eventually received based upon the application and visits to the school. She was also the Grade Level Chair, Principal's Cabinet Member, a member of the Teacher Assistance Team, Student of the Month Selection Committee, is active in organizing the yearly Homer Davis School Carnival, and member of the Parent Teacher Organization. In addition, she wrote reading/writing curriculum for Arizona's College and Career Ready Standards with Flowing Wells third-grade teachers (2013-2014) and math curriculum for Arizona's College and Career Ready Standards with the third-grade team of Homer Davis (2014-2015). christa McAuliffe "i touch the future, i teach" Award Jan Autenreith flowing Wells Education Association Jan is a poster child for the advocacy of the profession. She has been an Association Building Representative and is currently the Political Action Chair and Vice President of Flowing Wells Education Association. As Political Action Chair, Jan keeps members and parents up to date on school funding and political issues. She has written opinion pieces for the Arizona Daily Star. She is a member of the GREAT team and a staunch supporter of public education. Jan regularly visits the Arizona State Capitol to speak with Arizona legislators in addition to calling and sending them emails and letters, reminding them to do what is right for our public school children and teachers. AEA honored the following members and public education supporters at the Salute to Excellence Awards luncheon at this past Delegate Assembly in April. Below is a list of the honorees. Award Winners
