BACK TO SCHOOL 2014 | WEAnews 14 Andrew Miller, who graduated from South High, and three graduates from East High, David Wolf, Emily Ferris and Megan Defer, qualified for SIEA scholarships and are now attending various higher education institutions around Wyoming. Andrew Miller is enrolled at the University of Wyoming this fall, and his intended major will be in Music Education. Andrew was a member of the National Honor Society, and he competed on South's track and speech and debate teams. Andrew also excelled in the school's marching, pep and jazz bands, and made the All-State Jazz Band for 2014. David Wolf is attending Eastern Wyoming College, where he wishes to pursue a career in welding. David participated on the golf team at East, played his trumpet, and worked part-time. Emily Ferris is a student Laramie County Community College to pursue her Associate's in Science, and later plans to attend the University of Nebraska to major in Pharmacy. She was a member of East High's National Honor Society. Emily also worked part-time, and worked in a private home as needed, assisting and supervising a young teenager with multiple disabilities. In addition, she completed volunteer work at a local elementary school, assisting two students with disabilities. Megan Defer is attending the University of Wyoming. Her goal is to major in Education and to pursue a career as a secondary teacher in math and science. She is currently in a college-prep program called GEARUP, is an avid reader, and participated in her high school library's book club. The Specialists in Education Association (SIEA) is a local association of about 125 members that supports, informs and advocates for the para- educators of Laramie County School District #1. The SIEA Scholarship Fund originated in 2005 and is designed to financially assist qualifying students pursue their goals upon graduating from high school. With the help and dedication of many volunteers within our membership, community, and the WEA, SIEA has been successful in raising over $10,000, allowing us to award 18 scholarships totaling between $500 to $700 each since the scholarship's inception. Four Recent Cheyenne Grads Receive SIEA Scholarships Mary Wolf, SIEA Board President, Andrew Miller, Emily Ferris, Megan Defer, David Wolf Christine Fitzgerald, SIEA Board Treasurer Darlene Heil, SIEA Scholarship Committee University of Wyoming alumni, friends, educators and others throughout Wyoming have opportunities to meet with UW College of Education Interim Dean Michael Day and celebrate the college's 100th anniversary this fall. Day will be visiting all 23 Wyoming counties to commemorate the College of Education's centennial. During his time in the counties, Day hopes to spend time in local schools and with district educators, counselors and administrators; visit other educational organizations and institutions such as early childhood centers and post-secondary education providers; spend time with UW employees who reside around the state; and interact with College alumni and other community members who are interested in the work of the College. A public reception is also being planned in each county. These evening events are all open to the public, and no RSVP is required. Light refreshments will be served. "I'm excited to get out and around the state to connect with our many alumni and friends, celebrate a century of service to the state, and seek input on the significant plans we have for the future," Day says.
