20 Special Election Edition 2014 x AEA Advocate The AEA Latino Outreach Foro was held on September 18 at Carl Hayden High School to connect the community to services they need and educate them about the quality teachers, staff, and programs in our neighborhood public schools. The Foro discussed the challenges facing our public schools and the importance of voting so our schools receive the support needed to meet the needs of our children. Cadre leader Nidia Lias was on a panel moderated by Rabago. By providing these educational resources to the Latino community, the Cadre hopes to protect parents from the false promises delivered by private school voucher and parent trigger proponents, whose only interests are for profit and not the academic success of our students. "Hispanic parents want what every parent wants, for their kids to do better in life than they did," says Philpot. "We want to provide resources and information to these families, so we are giving the same message we always have, in Spanish, to these communities to create more Hispanic involvement and get our message out to a wider audience." "This project has been a great way to reach not just our members, but the public and potential members too as they see the relevance of what we're doing," says Lias. "Because of where Arizona is right now, this is the right time to do this. We are finally giving a community a voice." 2 AROUND AEA aea Latino outreach cadre MeMbers Nidia Lias – Chair Rudy Aguilar Juan Chavez Melanie Cobos James Diaz Jennifer Flores Marisol Garcia David Hernandez Kinora Hernandez Liz Leivas Maria Leyva Cathy Paredes Angela Philpot Enrique Ruiz Christy Sainz Cynthia Tercero Doug Kilgore, AEA Staff Liaison AEA Latino Engagement Cadre, cont. from page 19 "This project has been a great way to reach not just our members, but the public and potential members too as they see the relevance of what we're doing." — Nidia Lias, Cadre chair
