GADD'S SIXPACK Cool-Weather Quaffs BEERS TO STOCK UP ON FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON AND BEYOND Boulevard Brewing The Sixth Glass Quadruple Ale The name comes from a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. ("In the sixth glass sits the Devil himself; he is a little welldressed man, most charming and pleasant . . . He even brings a lamp to light your way—not to your home, but to his.") The addition of candy sugars gives this devilish Belgian-style quad unctuous notes of charcoal-smoked dried fruit, a ruddy mahogany color and a limber mouthfeel. Boulevard's Belgian-born brewmaster, Steven Pauwels, brings Bruges to the American Midwest. NOTE: In big news for Kansas City, Boulevard Brewing was sold last month to Belgian brewing company Duvel Moortgat, maker of Belgian classic Duvel ("devil") and which also owns Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY. Boulevard founder John McDonald, a Belgian beer devoté for three decades, describes the transaction as a "partnership" and promises to remain closely involved. Deschutes Chasin' Freshies This fresh-hops IPA from Oregon's can-do-no-wrong brewery is a tribute to the unending search for fresh powder, a quest that every mountain-bound Newcastle Cabbie Newcastle's newest limited edition is a dark black ale with a softly hopped aroma and subtle fruit notes leading to bittersweet dark malt, chocolate, coffee and vanilla. To support the launch, a national social responsibility program will be introduced to encourage consumers, 21 and older, to get home safely throughout the holiday season. Depending on the market, the initiative will offer a $5 credit toward a cab fare using the Taxi Magic app, or the chance to win a year of free cab rides home. Cabbie is available through January 2014. skier and snowboarder will relate to. Me, I couldn't guide Rosebud down a driveway in Iowa . . . but hell, a couple of glasses of this stuff and I'm ready to take on Telluride. This year's edition is fresh, floral and bittered up with Amarillo hops. Let it snow! Fish Tale Ice Breaker Winterfish Seasonal Ale This cold, wintery catch (newly rebranded and re-labeled) from Olympia, Washington, is revved up with a double dose of sassy Yakima Chinook hops, backing up the rounded stone fruit and dusky malt tones. If ice-fishing is your thing, this is your beer. Don't forget your mittens. Samuel Adams Fat Jack Double Pumpkin Pumpkin pie, straight out of the oven, wafts off the nose—a gorgeous olfactory prelude to the holiday season. Positively sumptuous on the palate, this ale goes to town with malty richness and a creamy mouthfeel like spicecake batter, while the long, edgy finish keeps you coming back for another gulp. I'll take this in my trick-or-treat bag, please. C M Y CM MY CY CMY K Shipyard Brewing Smashed Pumpkin The fireglow color is certainly jack-o-lantern orange, but I don't get much pumpkin from the nose of this seasonal from Portland, Maine. Instead, curious, citrusy 7-Up float aromas invite further exploration. On the palate, an aggressive, hoppy bitterness keeps the sweet, shy pumpkin notes in check, while cider-like acidity plays long into the finish. 58  /  the tasting panel  /  november 2013 TP1113_034-65.indd 58 10/24/13 9:19 AM
