Coastal breezes and incoming fog are a cooling source for the fruit grown at Blackjack Vineyard on the cool, fertile Monterey County valley floor. 10SPAN Vineyards (2012) Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County Mouthfilling with a lanolin-lemon nectar, this buttery, fine-tuned 100% barrel-fermented Chardonnay is a welldeveloped, round white that sings the full-bodied sunshine praise of the Santa Maria Valley. Sourced primarily from the sandy loam soils of the historic Sierra Madre Vineyard, just 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, it is the northernmost and one of the westernmost vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley, benefiting from unique marine influences. The talon-ted winemaker: John Clark. 10SPAN Vineyards (2011) Pinot Noir Santa Barbara , County Feather-light, feminine and scented with antique rose petals, this stunner delivers raspberries and cherries while dusting your tongue with a powdered cinnamon finish. The high acid structure makes her beg for food. Winemaker John Clark sources most of the fruit from the Santa Maria Valley, from the prestigious River Bench and the gently sloping hills of Garey Vineyard, first planted in 1998 by Robert Mondavi. 102  /  the tasting panel  /  august 2013 TP0813_066-103.indd 102 7/24/13 9:52 PM
