INTRO-VINOUS Penfolds' Perfect Pours TASTING WITH PETER GAGO—WINEMAKING'S WIZARD OF OZ by Richard Carleton Hacker / photos by Rob Brown Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago presented the Penfolds wines at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I n all the years I've known him, Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago has remained as vibrant, assertive and focused as the wines he produces. And when not creating award-winning wines, Gago traverses the globe as an exuberant ambassador for the Penfolds portfolio. During one such stopover in Los Angeles recently, Gago and I met for lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel to sample Penfolds' latest releases. Although the hotel's Polo Lounge is ground zero for celebrity star gazing, this time glances were aimed at our table and its array of Penfolds super-premium red wines, which included their 2009 St. Henri Shiraz ($99), 2010 Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon ($350), 2010 RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz ($150), 2010 Magill Estate Shiraz ($130) and their flagship, the 2008 Grange ($850), which had already been given a perfect score of 100 by a few U.S. wine writers, thus bumping the SRP of this limited yearly release 120  /  the tasting panel  /  august 2013 TP0813_104-132.indd 120 7/24/13 9:41 PM
