"I know I can do it," Jodi said. "That is motivation in itself." In addition to exercise programs, other outfits focus on both eating and working out, including Weight Watchers. The program, which is known for having weekly meetings, teaches clients how to eat based on a point system. A client is allowed so many points per week based on height, weight and activity level. In addition to food points, activity is part of the program, along with education about nutrition, exercise and food shopping. Romae Lenci, a Weight Watchers group leader, became a leader after losing 50 pounds more than two decades ago. Lenci first attended a Weight Watchers meeting in Michigan when she was an average skinny 13-year-old, but was worried she might become obese like her older siblings. Soon enough, her siblings and her parents were shedding pounds and she was learning to eat better. "Weight Watchers taught me how to eat and that I didn't have to starve and diet," she remembers. "It was very realistic for me." Years later, in 1989, after she nursed her first child through severe food allergies that limited what she could eat, Lenci went on a food spree. "Whatever I wanted I was just going to eat. I thought, 'I am happy, I'm married, I have a baby'," she said. "But [in reality] I was miserable and I was hiding behind my clothes — and I had never felt that way in my life." Lenci sought balance and wanted to be able to keep up with her little girl. She went from a size 14 to a size 6. It took nine months, and she forever gave up beef, lamb and pork. "It is a totally different lifestyle," Lenci said. After going back to Weight Watchers and losing 50 pounds, Lenci never left. Instead, she became a group leader. Now she oversees 12 meetings a week. The reasons people choose any type of nutrition or exercise program vary from doctor's orders, to inspiration from friends who were successful, to families and friends who sign up together. Whether it's boot camp, pilates, a challenge or an eating program, experts have high hopes for local residents to emerge fitter and happier. "It's more about making wise choices," Lenci said. "That is the most important thing people can do." n
