JULY 2010 HEALTH & HAPPINESS 74 PEDALING FOR A CAUSE This summer, Brent Freeman is going the extra mile. The 22-year-old Los Alamitos native and current CSULB senior graduates next spring, but he is spending this summer as one of 100 people who are riding their bicycles across the country. The two-month journey is expected to raise $500,000 for Push America, a not-for-profit organization which builds disability access structures throughout the nation. "The event is not only going to help people but I'm going to be pushing myself and learning a lot about myself [while] sitting on a bike for four to eights hours a day!" said Freeman. The 4,000 mile "Journey of Hope" began on June 9 in San Francisco and Seattle, and will end on August 14 in Washington, D.C. The cyclists will cover one of three routes — a northern, central, or southern itinerary — then meet to ride the last 35 miles together to the U.S. Capitol. Freeman is on the southern route, which takes him down the California coast to Thousand Oaks, then through Las Vegas, Texas, and Georgia before heading up to the Carolinas. Cyclists will average 75 miles a day. Along the way, Freeman and his fellow riders will support Push America's good work with pre-scheduled Friendship Visits. These visits include FACES & PLACES : COMMUNITY HERO WRITTEN BY DAWN MORI PHOTOGRAPHED BY HARTONO TAI BRENT FREEMAN
