Alperin has chosen "Celebrate the Journey" as this year's theme in performing philanthropic work throughout the city. Downtown now has a free iPhone application. The organic farm will educate New City School students and the community about nutrition and Earth-friendly ways of farming. Broadway. n Style and Art On June 5, hundreds took to Long Beach's shoreline for the 22nd Annual AIDS Walk. Participants and their pets joined in the 5K Walk-a-Thon/Pet Walk and 5K/10K Red Ribbon Run. The effort raises money to promote HIV/AIDS education and foster open communication about the virus. The Long Beach Community Action Plan Partnership (LBCAP) has received a $17 million energy contract to help low-income families with their energy needs. The contract will fund programs to improve energy use and offer cooling services during warm conditions. The Charter Communications Long Beach Sea Festival opened June 4, with the USA Swimming National Open Water Championship. The Marine Stadium hosted 87 world-class swimmers as they competed in the weekend's open water races. Director of the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, Phil Hester has announced his retirement.
