Propmaker James Stacy built the basement boiler (which plays as the portal to the clockworks) out of an old septic tank, a maze of copper tubing, and an assortment of valves and gauges. The 1950s period and small-town American tone of the film is established in the opening sequence; Lewis arrives by Greyhound bus in the New Zebedee town square, and the combined use of picture vehicles, architecture and period signage combine to tell the audience where the story will unfold.
