sequence. Mark is also responsible for the vomiting pumpkins, which are sure to become a signature of the film! Another fun and challenging set was Florence Zimmerman's house. Cate Blanchett plays Mrs. Zimmerman, a witch who lives next door to Lewis and Jonathan. As scripted, her house and wardrobe are both entirely purple! Working with costume designer Marlene Stewart, we arrived at a palette of purples, ranging from bluish to fuchsia. We then chose fabrics and created custom wallpapers which simultaneously acknowledged Mrs. Zimmerman's European heritage, stayed within the prescribed color palette, and remained grounded in the credible (if heightened) reality of the rest of the film. Not surprisingly, the sets required many custom- made pieces of set dressing. Mrs. Zimmerman first appears in the film stepping out from a giant grandfather clock in the entry hall of the house. Set Designer Cassidy Shipley designed the clock, which was built by propmaker Peter Johnson. Cassidy also designed the giant telescope and solar system model ("orrery") that appear in Isaac's secret workshop. A. FLORENCE ZIMMERMAN'S HOUSE. ILLUSTRATION BY JAMIE RAMA.
