He was the son of Richard J. Sawaya and Elaine F. Karner. His father, an S Sgt 491 AAF Bomb GP died in WWII in Europe on June 5, 1944. Gary was only one year old. His mother remarried and had four more children. At the age of ten, he was a featured performer on The Mickey Mouse Club show and tap danced alongside Annette Funicello (see photo). Upon graduation from Saint Augustine High School, Gary moved to Los Angeles where he worked at Bullock's department store as the window display designer. Later, he worked at the very popular Baldacino's as an interior designer. Gary moved to San Francisco in the 1970s and worked for Crockett Banks as their interior designer. He left San Francisco and worked as an event planner in Palm Springs. His clientele included Frank Sinatra and Busby Berkeley.
