D Zinger 5 - We needed areas to stage exterior sequences in the dank parts of LA. Turns out, not much is of Downtown LA is still dank, and the areas that are have those $5,000/month apartments above them, which, for some reason, the people paying those rents don't want movie lights and gunshots outside of their windows at three a.m. Go figure… Solving zinger 1 – Boy, did I get lucky!! I ended up with a dream Art Department. Jon Carlos, who was a production assistant fresh out of school back in the ancient days of Team America, had grown into a great TV Art Director, with crazy skills and an amazing sense of organization. He was available— but only for, at most, a month, as he and his wife were expecting a baby very soon. However, he had been working with Sam Avila as an Art Director on Westworld, and said that she was looking to play in features. So we launched the plan that we would start Jon as the Art Director, with Sam as the assistant, and she would take over from Jon when he went off to fatherdom. Both were amazing, willing to dig in and solve problems of budget, schedule, and design completion with grace and great humor. C E
