of underwater storage for the IT, the concept was based on research of servers in Switzerland that are in underground caves. Instead of tanks, the storage husks are submerged in massive underground reservoirs that hold all the data for the hosts and park guests, as well as the staff. The script calls for the water from these tanks to overflow and cause the ultimate annihilation of all the hosts in the park. This was a tall order to fill, and like the end of every show, not a lot of cash in the bank to make it. Art Director Sam Avila, who had project-managed the Protagoras labs, oversaw the reconfiguration of the components to form the Forge mega-facility It seems fitting to mention at this point, the award-winning visual effects team commanded by Jay Worth. Working closely with him through the entire series was such an education for me. Building a vision together was incredibly rewarding. His sensitivity to keeping things real whenever possible helped ground the final product in reality. For the Forge, we had to work hard to figure out how best to sell the colossal size of the facility as we both struggled with our dwindling funds. I have to admit until Westworld, I have never really done episodic television. The Knick, which I did with Stephen Soderbergh, was a rare situation with one director who is also the cameraman, editor and producer. Nothing could have prepared me for the chaos of working with four-to-five directors and three units shooting simultaneously on big sets and in remote locals. I now have the utmost respect for the poor souls who take on any episodic TV show and what they go through to pull it off. But despite all this, I am afraid that I have succumbed to the same fate as the first season crew who chose to return to Westworld. Just like the Hosts in the park, we must return to our loops. See you again in season three. ADG A. ENTRANCE TO PROTAGORAS, SHOT AT THE TRONA PINNACLES. STILL PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN P. JOHNSON. B.
