T U L L Y | P E R S P E C T I V E 4 3 My first in-person meeting with Jason occurred in Toronto over a slice of pie in Kensington Market. We talked more about personal relationships and the characters than about the design of the film. Tully isn't just a film about motherhood and family, but also about growing up and perceptions of adulthood. We talked about the characters and their life trajectories, about who Charlize Theron's character Marlo was, about how and why she came to choose her husband and how she remembered her younger self. Early discussions involved delving into our own personal histories and finding common threads in our lives that we could bring to the characters in this movie. I began my design process like I usually do, gathering images, but added the element of searching for story. Researching images online A. MARLO'S LIVING ROOM, PRODUCTION STILL.
