A F I P R O D U C T I O N D E S I G N S H O W C A S E | P E R S P E C T I V E 2 3 On Friday, June 8, the AFI Conservatory marked the close of another academic year with a reception celebrating the work of the First and Second Year Production Design Fellows. The reception was held in the on-campus soundstage that had been transformed by the students into a nightclub for the event. Clips from their productions played on large screens over an open bar while film industry professionals were able to speak directly with the Fellows about their projects displayed around the perimeter of the stage. The work on display included measured drawings of locations, concept art, drafted plans and set models created in both digital and traditional techniques. The first-year Conservatory curriculum includes cycle films, short film production exercises that are written, produced, directed, designed, shot and edited by Conservatory Fellows. Each design Fellow collaborates on three of these exercises as Production Designer and three more where they serve as Art Directors. The second year focuses on designing a thesis film that is festival ready. To develop their Art Department skills, the design Fellows must complete theoretical "paper" projects, where they design, document and present five sets from stories of their own choice. All five of these projects are critiqued by design faculty and two are presented to a panel of professional designers. The AFI Conservatory thanks Jim Bissell, Scott Chambliss, Anastasia Masaro and Jeannine Oppewall for serving as this year's panel. Kristen graduated from the University of Cincinnati College - Conservatory of Music (CCM) with a BFA in stage design. Before attending the AFI Conservatory, she worked as an Art Department assistant on the feature film Goat, that was an official selection at the 2016 Sundance and the Berlin International Film Festivals. She has also worked as a freelance scenic painter for the Tony-nominated musical The Visit, and Living on Love at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. C.
