58 The Costume Designer Spring 2018 IN FOCUS BOLDFACE NAMES BFN - WORK CD Carol Ramsey just wrapped creator Beau Willimon's new series The First, airing on Hulu this fall. Set in 2032, it stars Sean Penn and Natascha McElhone in a story of a private space exploration company and a group of NASA astronauts' efforts to be the first humans to reach Mars. Ramsey and ACD Christine Jordan were thrilled to return to New Orleans for shooting. Ramsey says, "From Frenchmen Street, to the swamps of Louisiana, the series showcases the color and vibrancy of this extraordinary city." Research on Mars exploration and state-of-the-art spacesuits proved fascinating, creating an unexpected but interesting challenge to interpret what astronauts will wear for the seven-month travel to the red planet. NASA is actively involved in solving the laundry conundrum, as no viable laundry process is possible in a weightless environment. Currently for the International Space Station astronauts, fresh laundry is periodically sent up on a re-supply vehicle. This vehicle loaded with dirty clothing, along with other garbage, is jettisoned, and burns up on atmospheric re-entry. As journalist Tyler Wells Lynch writes, "In all, the problem of dirty laundry in space highlights one of the most interesting things about human space travel: It's the little things— the unforeseen things—that tend to cause the biggest problems." Crediting the Amazon pilot Upload as one of the most collabora- tive projects she has ever designed, CD Kathleen Felix-Hager was thrilled to work closely with creator/writer/director Greg Daniels, di- rector of photography Amy Vincent, and production designer Gerry Sullivan. They worked together to create a sci-fi world set in the not-too-distant future, where a man is able to choose his own after- life after his untimely death. Feeling that Costume Designers aren't always given the respect from other departments that they deserve, this project brought Felix-Hager great joy to know that her work was a valued element to telling the story.
