34 The Costume Designer Spring 2018 The Italian Association for Production Designers, Costume Designers and Set Decorators (A.S.C.) has recently celebrated its 40th year of promoting the talents and expertise of its members, many of whom are also members of the Costume Designers Guild. Carlo Poggioli has been president of the A.S.C. since 2016 and the association counts Milena Canonero, Gabriella Pescucci, the "Maestro" Piero Tosi, production designer Dante Ferretti, and set decorator Francesca Lo Schiavo, among its distinguished members. Like Local 892, the association supports its members by defending the standards within the filmmaking community, and by champion- ing the work of its membership. In the last decade, the association has organized costume exhibitions, conducted training courses for graduate students, offered legal advice to its members and most importantly, brought them together in a community through regular meetings and conferences. Among the most successful of the association's efforts is the magazine, Scenografia & Costume, which began nearly 15 years ago as a small, 12-page periodical for A.S.C. members. Since its hum- ble beginnings, the magazine has grown to a 96-page publication and has been sponsored by the most prestigious Italian costume houses, prop makers, and film industry suppliers. The magazine is published in both Italian and English and features in-depth articles and photographs from recent film, theater, and events. It features articles about association members and their directors to give read- ers a more complete view of the collaboration of filmmakers behind the scenes. Scenografia & Costume is now is sold in bookstores and newsstands throughout Italy, reaching an audience outside its association. To celebrate four decades of the A.S.C., members gathered in Rome, along with many actors, directors, and producers at the Museum of Contemporary Arts Palazzo delle Esposizioni. 2018 also saw the association partner with 16 other European associations, becoming one of the founding members of the European Federation for Costume and Production Design. As the A.S.C. partners with other European film associations, Scenografia & Costume will expand to feature the work of designers from all over the conti- nent. The magazine will soon launch an online version.
