Storage News N Irving Harvey adopts DIT Station Rogue EW YORK — DIT Samuel Gursky, owner of a digital imaging services company Irving Har- vey (http://ditnerd.tumblr.com/) is calling on the DIT Station Rogue by DIT Station for his on-set camera transfer and data management workflow. This portable and compact on-set data manage- ment and playback workstation is suited for a variety of workflows, including Red and Canon cameras. The DIT Station Rogue integrates Sonnet's Echo Express Pro Thunder- bolt Expansion Chassis for PCIe cards with a Red Rocket transcoding and playout card — or any other video card. These devices are con- nected to an enclosed 13-inch Mac- Book Pro platform, with full RAID storage provided by Sonnet Fusion F3's vibration-isolated storage system. Also included are Sonnet's Echo ExpressCard Pro Thunderbolt Adapter SxS card reader, Tempo SATA Pro 6Gb four-port eSATA controller, and card readers for CompactFlash and RedMag 1.8-inch SSD media. "The DIT Station Rogue gives me the power and flexibility of a tower computer in the portabil- ity of a laptop," says Gursky (pictured), who spe- cializes in commercials and music videos. "Although I often work with Red camera formats, I appreciate that the built-in Sonnet Thunderbolt solutions are format-agnostic and allow me to use my equip- ment with any sort of media, such as SxS, Com- pactFlash, and RedMag cards. I can transfer data in the time it takes for me to click the card into the reader — it's that fast." He says that prior to using the DIT Station, it would take an hour to set up his equipment. Previ- ously, to facilitate on-location data transfers from cameras, Gursky was daisy-chaining his MacBook Pro to a camera card reader and then to two LaCie's two newest feature USB 3.0 H FireWire 800 drives — a set-up that was slow and hot-running. With this configuration, transferring a single hour of footage could take all night and there was no mechanism for realtime playback as the transfer was occurring. With the DIT Station Rogue, Gursky can transfer the footage in realtime via the MacBook's Thunderbolt connection and the Echo Express Pro/Tempo SATA Pro combo — connect- ed to a RedMag reader in a Red Rocket workflow, for example. The Red Rocket transcoder offers full debayered Red camera footage in ProRes 4444. Gursky can receive footage from the camera and ingest it through one of three card readers; do data management; view full-res playback; perform on-set image adjustment; and deliver dailies out of the case. ILLSBORO, OR — At IBC, LaCie (www.lacie.com) displayed its 2big and 4big Quadra multi-bay pro RAID solutions, which now feature USB 3.0 technol- ogy. LaCie completely re-engineered these drives to get optimized performance from the newest Mac computers. Thanks to USB-attached SCSI protocol compatibility and 7,200rpm hard drives, these prod- ucts reach speeds up to 210MB/s and 245MB/s respectively, allowing users to transfer 10GB of data in less than a minute. The LaCie 2big Quadra USB 3.0 and LaCie 4big Quadra USB 3.0 are suited for content creation, secure back-up, or massive desktop storage. Video editors can play back multiple HD video streams at the same time with Final Cut Pro X or Premiere. There is also backwards compatibility with USB 2.0. The LaCie 2big Quadra's cooling system includes heat-dissipating aluminum casing, a redesigned fan, and jumbo heat exhausts. The LaCie 4big Quadra offers the Noctua cooling system. The LaCie 2big Quadra is available in 4TB or 6TB capacities starting at $499. The LaCie 4big Quadra is available in 8TB or 12TB capacities starting at $1,099. They are available this month. Facilis storage gear enhanced with Atto technology H UDSON, MA — At IBC, Facilis (www.facilis.com) showed its TerraBlock shared storage and shared file system, which now incorporates Atto Technology's 16Gb/s Celerity Fibre Channel host bus adapters. The Atto technology provides high performance connectivity for Facilis's shared storage products. Atto's Celerity 16Gb Fibre Channel HBAs are based on the latest PCIe 3.0 technology and offer high bandwidth and low latency, as well as scalable connectivity with twice the maximum throughput of previous solutions. They address the needs of streaming media content cre- ation with faster data transfers with Advanced Data Streaming technology for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux environments. Combining Atto's Celerity HBAs and the TerraBlock pro- vides an integrated solution for all types of collaborative, cross-platform post environments. "As 3D and 4K workflows become more prevalent, it's crucial that facilities have a high-band- width solution in place to facilitate playback of these large frame-based formats," explains Facilis VP, James McKenna. "With Atto's 16 Gb/s advancements, our customers are able to leverage much higher throughput without the software and hardware overhead of spanning ports." 20 Post • October 2012 www.postmagazine.com
